Heart Healthy Valentine’s Day Bento

Hi everyone… Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’ll admit, I’ve always been one of those jerks that grumbles about Valentine’s Day (or “Obligatory Love Day,” as I’ve been known to call it).  But when it comes to bento inspiration, the holiday offers some fun opportunities, so I just had to make a cheerful Valentine’s lunch.

I tried to incorporate as many red and pink foods as I could, and pulled out any of my heart-shaped bento accesories.  Let’s see, there’s pink salmon in a lettuce cup, spruced up with sesame oil and nanami togarashi, with cherry tomatoes on the other side of the heart-shaped baran.  Then brown rice and asparagus spears… not holiday-themed but delicious all the same.  Then, the heart extravaganza there in the back: a heart-shaped cup of almonds, heart-shaped gummy candies, and a heart-shaped cup of rosy-hued blood orange.  I didn’t realize this until I was eating it, but it’s actually a really heart-healthy meal, too!  Salmon, almonds, brown rice, asparagus… wow, what’s not to love?

And yeah, I have to say: this bento did manage to make me smile at the thought of Valentine’s Day.  Watch out, world…
